Tripura chief minister Biplab Deb on Wednesday wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah, expressing his willingness to settle about 34,000 Bru refugees, who are against their repatriation to Mizoram, in his state.
The Bru refugees have been living in camps in Tripura ever since they fled their native Mizoram following ethnic clashes with majority Mizos about 20 years ago.
In his letter, Deb said the refugees belong to 5,082 families and have continued to live in the camps after four of their organisations refused to return home, raising concerns over their security.
Since the beginning of the repatriation process in August, only 600 Brus belonging to 144 families have returned home. The Centre wants the repatriation of Brus to conclude by the end of this month.
