BRAVE BSF OFFICER WHO DIED FIGHTING WITH SMUGGLERS IN TRIPURA AWARDED GALLANTRY MEDAL (POSTHUMOUS)
Border Secutiry Force (BSF) officer, Sh Dipak Kumar Mandal 2IC/Offg Comdt, who made supreme sacrifice and laid down his life in the finest tradition of the Force, while fighting with the ANEs / smugglers near BOP Belardeppa (renamed as BOP Dipak) on the Indo-Bangladesh border in Tripura has been awarded Police Gallantry Medal on the eve of the 71st Republic Day.
Sh Dipak Kumar Mandal Second-in-Command of 145 Bn BSF was deployed Salbagan, Agartala. He was very courageous and hardworking officer. He made significant contribution in controlling the trans-border crimes in Sonamura area and played pivotal role in erecting of improvised Fence and construction of Composite Fence in Sonamura.
In the month of Oct 2017, Sh Dipak Kumar Mandal 2iC was performing the duties of Officiating Commandant, 145 Bn BSF. On 15 Oct 2017, he was present at BOP Belardeppa for supervision of night domination operations. At midnight, he was informed about accident of BSF vehicle near Sonamura. He immediately left for accident site, but enroute he observed 25-30 smugglers / ANEs trying to drive a herd of 15-20 cattle on the road towards Sonamura side for smuggling. He along with guard and driver immediately got off from vehicle and challenged the smugglers / ANEs to stop smuggling of the cattle. The smugglers started stones pelting and encircled the BSF party.
Sh. Dipak Kumar Mandal, 2IC/Offg Comdt realised that they are outnumbered, so he called Coy Comdr Belardeppa for reinforcement and he himself stood firmly against the smugglers, who were in possession of stones/bricks, machetes (Dah) and other sharp edged weapons. Then suddenly, one Bolero Pickup Vehicle of smugglers tried to hit Sh. Dipak and he had a narrow escape. Subsequently, the smugglers conspired again and rammed Sh. Dipak Kumar Mandal, 2IC/Offg Comdt with another Bolero Pickup Vehicle from behind with its light off at very high speed with intension to kill him, which caused multiple grievous injuries on his head and body. Thereafter, the smugglers fled away from the spot. Officer was immediately evacuated to ILS Hospital Agartala and further evacuated to Kolkata by Air and admitted to Medica Super Speciality Hospital, where he remained under treatment w.e.f 16 Oct 2017 to 20 Oct 2017. Officer finally attained martyrdom at 11.35 AM on 20th Oct 2017.
Sh. Dipak Kumar Mandal, 2IC fought valiantly against the smugglers and displayed highest degree of professionalism and sincerity towards his duties and loyalty to the Nation. In order to avoid collateral damage, Officer even restrained the use of lethal weapon showing his utmost concerns toward the populace. Resultantly, Officer has been awarded Police Gallantry Medal on the eve of the 71st Republic Day.
