Strong reaction and outrage after President nominates CJI(Rtd) Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha

Former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been nominated to Rajya Sabha, according to a notification by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Ranjan Gogoi to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to the retirement of one of the nominated members,” the notification said.

As a CJI, Ranjan Gogoi had presided over many crucial benches that delivered several landmark judgments, including Ayodhya land dispute, the abolition of homosexuality in India, entry of women in Sabrimala temple and clean chit to Modi government on Rafale deal.

Gogoi headed a five-judge bench that gave the verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute on November 9 last year. He retired as CJI later that month.

Justice Gogoi’s nomination has drawn some sharp reactions from the Opposition.

Many leaders of opposition parties suggested that Gogoi’s nomination was quid pro quo.
