Border Haats Along India-Bangladesh Border Reopens After Three Years

On Tuesday, the Border Haat (market) located in Srinagar, Sabroom in South Tripura was reopened by officials from both India and Bangladesh, after being closed for three years.

The reopening ceremony was attended by Dhanbabu Reang, the additional district magistrate of South Tripura, and Abhishek Das, his counterpart from Feni district in Bangladesh.

Bidhan Chandra Roy, the SDM of Sabroom said, “Although there was a significant turnout of Indian buyers, there were no buyers from Bangladesh and the number of traders from both countries was limited.

Therefore, the business on the first day was not very active.” SDM further said, “Srinagar Border Haat will be held every Tuesday from 9 am to 4 pm as agreed upon by both countries. The administration has already improved the infrastructure, upgraded facilities for buyers and sellers, and arranged for sufficient security measures.”

Notably, the Srinagar Border Haat was established in January 2015 but was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.
