Opposition CPI(M) leaders led by former minister Badal Chaudhury, former minister Manik Dey and sitting MP Jitendra Chaudhury met the Director General of Police (DGP) during a deputation and submitted a memorandum demanding more security arrangements for Left Front candidates in the urban body by-elections.
Addressing a press conference at CPI(M) party office in Agartala after their deputation before the DGP, Badal Chaudhury said that his party earlier also asked for protection in the democratic activities of opposition parties during three-tier panchayat elections, similar situation is now prevailing across the state soon after announcement of by-election for civic bodies.
“Due to forceful resignation of elected representatives of civic bodies after March 3 election results, the state election commission has declared by-elections for 158 seats of 20 Civic bodies among the total 310 seats, which is total abnormal”, said Chaudhury. “It is the rarest incident that by-polls is going to held in above 50 percent seats of the total seats of civic bodies, the country never witnessed such abnormal situation, which total undemocratic in its nature”, said Chaudhury,
MP Jitendra Chaudhury also added that CPI (M) team has requested the DGP to take strong security measures so that opposition party candidates can file their nomination papers in a free, fair and peaceful way in all the centres where elections to be held.
