The Election Commission took strict action against some officers on Friday for not taking appropriate action when Congress leader Ajoy Kumar was allegedly attacked in Tripura.
The ECI said that the poll panel conveyed its “displeasure” to the Police Chief and State Chief Secretary as well as asked them to explain why the situation got escalated even after the presence of a sufficient number of Central Armed Police Forces.
ECI ordered suspension and immediate removal of the officer-in-charge of Jirania police station and officer-in-charge of Ranibazaar police station of Jirania sub-division under West Tripura District.
Besides,three special observers, namely B. Murali Kumar, Vivek Johri, and Yogendra Tripathy are deployed by the Commission to the State.
The Commission asked these observers to proceed to the Tripura immediately, check the situation and ensure proper deployment of CAPF.
It also instructed observers to intensify enforcement measures and report back to the Commission.
The ECI further said that the state government’s report confirmed minor injuries of Ajoy Kumar, which happened in an unauthorised rally and he did not receive serious injuries.
