The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the Night Shelter-Cum-Market Shed for Tribal Vegetable Vendors was held on 27th August, 2021 at Radhanagar, Agartala, West Tripura.
Mevar Kumar Jamatia, Minister of Tribal Welfare & Forest Department, Govt. of Tripura has laid the foundation stone in presence of the Director, Tribal Welfare Department, Director, TRP & PVTG. Besides, Addl. District Magistrate & Collector, West Tripura, Addl. Director, Tribal Welfare Department and Supt. Engineer, RD Department have also graced the occasion as special guest.
Regular huge numbers of tribal vegetable/fruits vendors from interior areas coming to Lake Chowmuhuni and surrounding markets in Agartala for vending their agricultural and forest products. But most of them face a lot of hardships due to want of proper arrangement of market shed to sell the vegetables and to stay at night.
Even sometimes, they had to sell out their commodities at half the price due to want of arrangement for night stay and custody of their goods. Keeping above in view, Tribal Welfare Department, Govt. of Tripura has decided to set up one well organized Night Shelter cum-Market for the Tribal vegetable vendors at Lake Chowmuhuni area of Agartala so that tribal vendors from interior areas can sell their agricultural and forest based commodities and can stay at night.
This project is a part of various initiatives and activities taken up by the Tribal Welfare Department, Govt. of Tripura for improving the economic and sustainable development of the Scheduled Tribes living in the state.
Expected expenditure for the construction of Night Shelter-Cum-Market Shed is Rs.183.51 Lakhs where a double storied building will be constructed. In the ground floor there will be an open market shed for tribal vegetable vendors and in the first floor there will be a 35 seated Night Shelter for tribal vegetable vendors with separate 18 nos. dormitories for male and 17 nos. dormitories for female. The construction is expected to be completed within August, 2022.
