MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Thursday raised the demand for speedy completion of Sonamura-Daudkandi inland waterway project.
Biplab Deb has drawn the attention of the concerned Ministry to quickly address the obstacles related to commercial shipping after the trial run on this route.
Notably, when Biplab Deb was Chief Minister, the process of commercial water transportation started for the first time, which allowed import and export goods at a comparatively low cost.
In the parliament session, Biplab Kumar Deb said that river dredging is necessary in Bangladesh for the successful management of this waterway. He highlighted that the Indian government already informed about the dredging work in the Bangladesh part, but Bangladesh said that they will do the dredging themselves.
Deb further said, “But till now the dredging work has not started in Bangladesh. The waterway will not be operational until the dredging is completed. Therefore, the Shipping Ministry of the Government of India strongly requested to discuss with the Government of Bangladesh to start the dredging work of Sonamura-Daudkandi inland waterway”.
He expressed the hope that the opening of commercial transport on this waterway would increase the commercial potential of Tripura and its adjoining states.
