Protests continue in Tripura over gang rape of college girl; CM Dr. Manik Saha says zero tolerance for crimes

According to authorities, a female college student, aged 20, was raped by three men while traveling in a car that was in motion in the West Tripura district of India.

The main suspect and one of his accomplices were apprehended shortly after the crime was made public, and a third suspect was detained on Thursday.

Gautam Sharma, aged 26 was identified as the main suspect and driver of the vehicle, Sudip Chetri, aged 31 was identified as an accomplice.

Both were taken into custody shortly after the incident became known. On Thursday, a third suspect, identified as Prasenjit Paul, aged 26, was also apprehended.

The victim, a 20-year-old student, was purportedly kidnapped while on her way back from college.

The victim was discovered at a deserted location near the bypass road late on Monday evening and was subsequently taken to GB Hospital for medical attention.

Police officials further stated that the victim’s health remains in a critical state. However, the victim’s mother alleges that four people were in the vehicle and that all of them participated in the rape of her daughter.

The police discovered Rs 90 lakh at the residence of one of the suspects.

On 10th May, 2023 an allegation of rape of one woman was reported at Amtali Police Station under West District.

On receiving the complaint Police has immediately registered a specific case against the accused persons vide Amtali PS Case No.71/2023, dated 10.5.2023, under appropriate sections of law and took up its investigation. As per stipulated norms so far all necessary legal steps have been taken including medical check up of the victim.

During investigation so far police has arrested two accused persons. During raid the involved vehicle and Indian currency amounting Rs.90 lacs have been seized from the house of one of the accused persons.

In this connection additional special teams have been formed and raids are going on in various parts of the State to nab the involved accused persons and to gather more evidences by using scientific aids. The investigation of the case is in progress.
