Single use plastics have become a curse to human civilisation. Not only does the environment get polluted due to the negative effects of plastic but it also affects our body. Therefore, public awareness mast be generated upon stopping usage of plastics in order to ensure sustainability on Earth, enunciated Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Sahu after launching Plastic Mukta Tripura Abhijan’, an initiative for elimination of single use plastic items organised at Agartala Town Hall today by Tripura Pollution Control Bourd under Science, Technology and Environment department. This month-long programme will continue till August 14.

The Chief Minister said, it is our duty to keep our environment safe. Every aware citizen is ought to keep their house as well as the surroundings clean. The Chief Minister called upon all the citizens to take the responsibility to keep their area clean and to throw wastes at a particular place instead of throwing elsewhere. He said, a single use plastic consists of about 13 thousand chemicals in it. Among which, about 3 thousand 200 chemicals are harmful for human body. As a result of using such plastics, different kinds of diseases arise in human hody.

The Chief Minister emphasized upon publicising hugely on stopping use of plastics. He said, public-awareness based programmes must be taken up on the negative effects of using plastic in schools, colleges, villages etc. of the state. All citizens must come forward taking the responsibility to build Plastic-free Tripura The Chief Minister also emphasized upon keeping all schools, colleges and office buildings of the state clean. He said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to build a single use plastic-free India must be delivered across the state through public awareness. The Chief Minister hoped for everyone’s cooperation in huilding a plastic- free Tripura.

Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder said, besides generating public awareness on the harmful effects of single use plastics, this drive has been taken to completely eradicate usage of plastics in Tripura.

Chief Secretary J. K. Sinha in the inaugural programme said, Tripura is the only state in entire country which never had to face negative comment in National Green Tribunal Forum or had to pay fine. This is because of the workers involved with local autonomous bodies of the state meluding the AMC The Chief Secretary called upon everyone to buy environment-friendly alternatives to plastics made by women involved with Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission.

Welcome speech was delivered by Principal Secretary of Science, Technology & Environment department, K. S. Seth. Other dignitaries present in the inaugural programme were Additional DGP Sauray Tripathi, Member Secretary of Tripura Pollution Control Board Dr. Bishu Karmakar. Vote of thanks was delivered by Director of Science, Technology & Environment department, Animesh Das. The Chief Minister unveiled the book cover on Plastic Mukta Tripura.

A visual documentary was presented in the programme on environment-friendly materials created as alternative to plastics by different Self-Help Groups under TRLM. A kit consisting of different materials made by the SHGs as alternative to plastics was handed over to the President of All Trapura Merchant Association for the purpose of marketing in the programme.
