Tripura: CPIM’s Jitendra Chaudhury Alleged MCC Violations In By-Elections by BJP

Jitendra Chaudhury, of the CPIM state committee’s secretary has called for prompt action against Tofazzal Hussain, the BJP candidate in the Boxanagar Assembly Constituency of Tripura’s Sepahijala district, in response to accusations of breaching the Model Code of Conduct.

The alleged violation is that Hussain openly urged government employees to vote for him in the by-election scheduled for September 5.

CPIM MLA Chaudhury wrote a letter to Tripura CEO Puneet Agarwal regarding the matter.
In the letter, Chaudhury alleged that “Md Tofazzal Hussain, a BJP candidate from this constituency attended a meeting of the All Tripura Madrasa Teachers Association (ATMTA) held in Kamalnagar under the 20-Boxanagar Assembly Constituency on August 20, 2023. Hussain addressed the Madrassa Teachers, advocated the secular character of the BJP as well as appealed to them to vote for him.”

He further said, “The ruling BJP allegedly organized this meeting of Madrasa Teachers as part of its election campaign. These Madrasa teachers are government employees, and many of them may be assigned to election duties.”

He added, “To ensure a fair election, it is essential that such government employees are not mobilized for election campaigning by any political party.

However, the BJP, being the incumbent party in Tripura, seems unapologetic about openly violating the provisions of the Model Code of Conduct.”

Chaudhury alleged that with the election date approaching, there are concerns that the ruling BJP’s eagerness to breach the election code will increase.
