Agartala, October 22: Agartala Press Club member and photojournalist Abhijit Bhattacharya and his son were allegedly assaulted near Jubo Sangha Club on Ramnagar 1st Street in Agartala during the early hours of October 21. A complaint has been lodged at West Agartala Police Station in connection with the incident.

According to the complaint, a jalsa was being organised at Jubo Sangha Club at around 1:10 am on the night of October 20. Despite the road being clear, a section of it was allegedly blocked with bamboo poles. After Abhijit Bhattacharya’s wife and son passed through the area, he reportedly removed the bamboo poles and attempted to proceed on his motorcycle.

At that point, some youths from the locality allegedly hurled verbal abuse at him before physically assaulting him. When his son tried to record the incident on his mobile phone, the attackers allegedly snatched the device and threw it onto the road, damaging it. His son was also reportedly assaulted while attempting to record the attack.

Both father and son sustained injuries in the incident and were subsequently taken to hospital for treatment.

The Agartala Press Club has strongly condemned the alleged assault and called for the identification of all those involved in the incident. The Press Club has also stressed the need for appropriate action against the accused.
