Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has won a historic fourth, non-consecutive term, defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in the presidential run-off.
Lula secured 51.79% of the vote against Bolsonaro’s 48.21%, marking the first time in Brazil’s modern democratic history that a candidate who finished second in the first round has won the run-off.
At the age of 80 he will be sworn into office on 5 January 2027, breaking his own record as the oldest president to take the oath of office since Brazil returned to a democracy.
