Dipa Karmakar among 9 gymnasts in Asian Games squad

Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar sealed her place in the Asian Games squad after topping the selection trials at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

Despite two knee operations in 2017 and 2019 and other setbacks, Dipa’s determination remained strong, which lead her to make a comeback.

Dipa Karmakar hired a physio, trained five hours a day for around two months at Agartala’s NSRCC Indoor Stadium with the cooperation of the Gymnastics Federation of India.

She appeared in the trials on July 11–12 after completing her suspension on July 10.
Her strong mindset and determination impressed her coach, Bishweshwar Nandi, and thus, he acknowledged her various achievements in the competition.

Despite her injuries, Dipa Karmakar performed each apparatus to her satisfaction, displaying determination and trust in her coach, Bishweshwar Nandi.

Nandi acknowledges Dipa’s courage and the special bond they share. He said, ” She has much confidence in me. I know how much she can train because she has injuries. I cannot put pressure on her due to fear for her legs. She, too, has the same fear. However, we don’t tell each other.”

Dipa Karmakar followed her coach’s advice and successfully completed the beam routine, celebrating with Nandi. Their focus now shifts to raising the bar for the Asian Games, with Nandi encouraging Dipa to attempt more challenging techniques.
