Malaria Spreading in remote places, 6 dead

The Health Department today said there has been spurt in the malaria PF cases over the past few months .

This cases has been seen especially in the month of August and in the month of September

Six (6) deaths were reported till now due to malaria.

Enough stock of Anti Malaria medicines is available at the Sub divisonal Hospital, said a medical officer.

Malaria is a parasitic disease transmitted via the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito, which carries a parasite known as Plasmodium. When the mosquito bites you, this parasite is freed into your bloodstream and infects the red blood cells (RBCs).

The Anopheles mosquito is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. And there are four main types of malarial parasites that are known to infect humans:

Plasmodium vivax (P.v.) – most widely distributed

Plasmodium ovale (P.o.) – the rarest type

Plasmodium malariae (P.m.) – not as widespread

Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) – the most dangerous

1. Plasmodium vivax (P.v.) – This type is spread across the globe and also predominantly found in India. Nearly 60 percent of malaria cases in India are caused by P.v. Although the illness is major, it seldom results in death or serious issues. Symptoms include diarrhea, fatigue, and recurring bouts of chills and fever. Primarily, these malaria symptoms are similar to the flu.

2. Plasmodium ovale (P.o.) – Mainly found in the tropical West African region, including Liberia, Ghana, and Nigeria, this is the rarest type of malaria one can contract. It’s rare because the parasite resides in the host’s body for extended periods – sometimes up to years – after the mosquito bite.

3. Plasmodium malariae (P.m.) – This type is found in the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, Africa, and South East Asia. It’s not considered as lethal as the others but ranks third in prevalence. Chills and high fever are the usual malaria symptoms.

4. Plasmodium falciparum (P.f.) – The largest number of malaria-related deaths are caused by this type, which is found in South East Asia, South America, and Africa. Symptoms include dizziness, muscle ache, fatigue, abdominal pain, sore back, seizures, nausea, vomiting, fever, headache, etc. Severe symptoms such as paralysis, convulsions, changes in level of consciousness, etc. can occur. As this variant is considered the most severe, early diagnosis and timely treatment are critical.

An estimated 300-600 million people are affected by malaria every year and a significant number die from it. With such high infection rates, it’s recommended that you take some preventive measures to avoid contracting this deadly disease.

Simple precautions such as these can go a long way:

Wear clothes that cover your body and don’t leave any part exposed.
