Hundreds of fire fighters attended a function at Tripura Fire Service HQs to observe ” Fire Service Day ” .
The decision taken by the Union Government of India dating back 1952 to observe National Fire Service Day and week. The biggest fire incident on 14th April,1944- the British freighter ‘SS Fort Stikine’ on Victoria dock at Bombay port in which 71 firefighters had lost their lives to save lives and assets.
The ship was parked at the port on April 12 without any safety concerns but on April 14, it caught fire and was exploited due to the storage of 1,400 tonnes of explosives. The ship was razed by two giant blasts and its debris was dissipated in the surrounding areas. The entire Victoria dock was abolished due to fire and explosion.
In this catastrophe, approximately 800 to 1300 people lost their lives. Accordingly , the Union Government of India decided that every year on April 14 to be observed as National Service Day every year across India to pay homage to the brave firefighters who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty while fighting the fires. Each year, to prevent such fires in future, and to increase awareness among civilians and school children and for all sections of societies , Fire & Emergency Services conduct training, drills and rehearsals to ascertain the preparedness to fight fire emergencies. Fire Services Week is observed from 14th to 20th of April in order to educate the general public about the need to minimize losses from fires.
This year’s theme for the National Fire Service Day is “Learn Fire Safety, Increase Productivity.”

Shri Anindya Kumar Bhattacharya , IAS, Additional Secretary, Revenue & Disaster Management & Director, Fire & Emergency Services has highlighted the aim behind the observance National Fire Services Day to pay homage to brave fire fighters and says “ We are proud of all categories of firefighters who save lives and properties in the event of fire without caring their own lives . I salute their bravery “ He also indicated steps taken by the State Government to modernize Tripura Fire Services . Tripura Home ( Fire & Emergency ) services department is organizing from April 14 to April 20 throughout Tripura to spread awareness among the public regarding fire safety.
The State level programme will be held on 19th April,2019 at Amtali School Ground at 11 AM. Hon’ble Minister Home ( Fire & Emergency Services ) Shri Ram Prasad Paul has given his kind consent to attend the State Level Programme as Chief Guest . NDRF,SDRF, District Disaster Management authorities, Civil Defence, Apada Mitra volunteers and other state level experts will conduct mockdrill exercises for the benefit of citizens and to ensure fire safety and saving lives and properties of citizens and efforts of the State Government towards a safer and disaster resilient Tripura . All the stakeholders are working to make the programme a grand success.
