Former Tripura Chief Minister and incumbent Rajya Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb criticized the left-front government for its failure to resolve the longstanding issue of Bru displacement in the state.

He urged the newly enrolled Bru voters to question the CPIM party about the reason of being labeled as refugees.

Deb made these remarks during a public gathering at Naising Para, a Bru settlement camp in the North Tripura District, where he was rallying support for BJP East Tripura candidate Kriti Singh Debbarman.

Biplab Kumar Deb criticized the CPIM government, which failed to address the issues faced by the Bru people in Tripura, particularly highlighting Jitendra Chaudhury’s tenure as an MP and cabinet minister.

He urged people to question opposition candidates about why the Bru people have lived as refugees in camps for so long.

Notably, the Bru people migrated to Tripura due to alleged ethnic violence in Mizoram in 1997, with around 30,000 individuals residing in six relief camps in Kanchanpur District.

During Biplab Deb’s tenure as Tripura Chief Minister, an agreement was signed on July 3, 2018, between the Centre, Mizoram, Tripura, and the Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) was formed for the permanent resettlement of Bru people in Tripura.

Deb credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enabling a dignified life for internally displaced Brus. He pledged continued access to basic facilities to Brus if Modi remains in power.
