Goddess Shailputri worshipped on first day of Navratri

After Mahalaya, the beginning of ‘Devipakhya’.
The sound of Maa Durga’s arrival is already drummed today when the first daylight fell on dew-wet soil of autumn, the first day of Navratri, after the ‘pran pratishtha’ of the idol of Goddess Durga, her first form, ‘Shailputri’, is worshipped.

Although Durga Puja is not associated with Mahalaya, Mahalaya is considered the beginning of Durga Puja.

It is a very special day for all Bengalis.
People wake up in the early morning or, even before dawn to celebrate Mahalaya by listening Chandi Path.

Some people do not even sleep at night to celebrate the precious moments with their friends and family.

Although listening to radio has decreased considerably, people feel nostalgic to hear Chandi Path through radio FM.

Many priests could be seen near lakes, ponds and river banks, who are ready to assist Hindu devotees so that they could offer the ritual of pitru tarpan during this day for the departed ancestors.
