Agartala, May 12: Belonia Police seized a large quantity of cloth bundles during a vehicle checking operation in the Jharjhari area of Bilonia on Tuesday morning and arrested the driver of the vehicle.
According to police sources, a DI vehicle was stopped and searched during routine checking in the area. During the search, police recovered 30 bundles containing nearly 1,500 pieces of clothes.
Speaking on the incident, Belonia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sanjit Sen said the vehicle was heading towards Rishyamukh. However, the driver failed to produce any valid documents related to the goods.
The seized items were later brought to the police station, where police estimated the market value of the recovered clothes at around Rs 5 lakh.
Police suspect that the clothes were being transported for smuggling into Bangladesh. An investigation has been launched to ascertain the source and destination of the consignment.
The arrested driver has been identified as Rubel Hossain, a resident of the Kalapania area under Sonamura subdivision.
