Agartala, June 15: A group of rebel Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs from West Bengal have joined the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (Tripura), an unrecognized political party based in Tripura. The development came to light after the legislators met the Speaker on Monday and informed him of their decision.
According to information available with the State Election Commission, the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (Tripura) is currently an unrecognized political party. The party had contested the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections by fielding candidates in a few constituencies but failed to secure any seats.
Political sources claim that the party was formed following discussions involving former Tripura Chief Minister and current MP Biplab Kumar Deb. The organization initially focused on building support among tribal communities in the state. However, its political activities have remained limited in recent years, and it has yet to receive recognition from the Election Commission.
With the induction of around 20 legislators from West Bengal, the party is expected to gain greater political significance and may become eligible for recognition from the Election Commission in the future, subject to fulfillment of the prescribed criteria.
Political observers are now closely watching whether the party can revive its organizational structure and expand its influence in Tripura and beyond.
