Agartala, July 17: The Tripura State Electric Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has launched a state-wide investigation into alleged electricity bill fraud involving certain meter readers. State Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the move on Wednesday, emphasizing that anyone found guilty would face strict action, regardless of their position.
The Minister informed that from December 2024 to July 2025, a total of 89,632 smart meters have been installed across the state. The number of electricity bills generated through these meters has also seen a significant rise: 43,611 in April, 58,048 in May, 73,593 in June, and 79,653 so far in July.
Addressing the media in Agartala, Minister Nath said, “Some complaints have recently been raised regarding smart meters and billing. In view of these concerns, I have directed the Electricity Corporation to initiate a thorough investigation.”
Accordingly, a special task force has been formed to look into the matter. The task force includes:
- Shishir Debbarma, Deputy General Manager
- Rajiv Kumar Roy, Deputy General Manager
- Sanjeev Nandi Majumdar, Senior Manager
- Jahar Debbarma, Senior Manager
To ensure transparency and facilitate public participation, the department has also launched two WhatsApp numbers – 6033131966 and 6909981274 – where consumers can lodge complaints specifically related to smart meters.
Minister Nath reiterated the government’s commitment to clean governance and warned that no one involved in such fraudulent activities would be spared.
