Transport minister Sushanta Chowdhury has proposed renaming Nischintapur Railway Station to Charipara Railway Station and is awaiting approval from the state assembly members.
MLA Meena Rani Sarkar highlighted her concern about agricultural losses of farmers due to water-logging issues caused by the construction of the Nischintapur railway station in the Badharghat assembly constituency.
In response, Chowdhury said that a temporary canal would be constructed to resolve the issue.
He further explained that the Agartala-Akhaura railway link project began in 2018 to improve trade between India and Bangladesh.
He added, “The railway runs for 12.5 km from Agartala Railway Station to Nischintapur, where IRCON Limited is constructing the Indian side and TEXMACO on the Bangladesh side.
Chowdhury said that he visited the construction site on March 26, 2023, with Transport department officials, local MLA, and 500 families who depend on agriculture in the area
He added, “Due to the construction, the height of the agricultural lands has decreased, causing water-logging during the monsoon season and rendering them unsuitable for farming. A meeting was held with IRCON Limited and farmers to address the issue, and it was decided that a canal would be constructed to relieve the farmers of their water-logging problem”.
Chowdhury expressed hope that with IRCON Limited and the Railway Ministry’s cooperation, the state government could support the 450 families dependent on agriculture in the area.
Meanwhile, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy also mentioned about a similar incident where farmers faced water logging problems after construction of the railway station at Khamarbari area under Teliamura assembly constituency, which was later resolved by constructing a temporary canal.
