Agartala, Sept 3: The Tripura police have launched an investigation after TIPRA Motha legislator Philip Kumar Reang was allegedly threatened by a group of youths inside the MLA Hostel in Agartala on Monday night.
Speaking to reporters, Director General of Police (DGP) confirmed that an altercation took place between the MLA and some individuals, who were later identified as guests of another resident. “We are investigating the matter,” the DGP said after visiting the hostel to review security arrangements.
Reang, who represents Kanchanpur constituency, later met Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at the Civil Secretariat along with five other TIPRA Motha MLAs, demanding strict security measures at the hostel.
Narrating the incident, Reang said he was outside his room talking to family members when three to four intoxicated youths threatened him. “I don’t know them, but later came to know that they were guests of BJP MLA Pramod Reang, who also stays here,” he alleged.
Following his complaint, police rushed to the spot and initiated inquiry. The MLA later wrote on Facebook: “New MLA Hostel is not safe for MLAs. I was threatened today around 10 pm by unknown drunk people in front of my room. Who should take responsibility for such security lapses?”
TIPRA Motha leader Brishaketu Debbarma said the threat was not against one MLA alone but a matter of concern for all legislators staying in the hostel. “The CM has assured us that security measures will be reviewed,” he added.
