The Election Commission of India announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The elections will be conducted in seven phases, starting from April 19 and ending on June 1.
The results will be counted on June 4, 2024.
In Tripura, voting for the West Tripura seat will take place on April 19 in the first phase, and for the East Tripura seat on April 26 in the second phase. The counting of votes in Tripura will also be held on June 4, 2024.
In addition to the Lok Sabha elections, a bypoll will also be held for the Ramnagar assembly constituency on April 19. The seat fell vacant following the unfortunate demise of BJP MLA Surajit Dutta in December 2022.
The deadline for filing nominations for the West Tripura seat is March 27, while for the East Tripura seat, it is April 4. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 30 for the West Tripura seat and April 8 for the East Tripura seat.
This year’s elections in Tripura are set to be intriguing, with two major alliances in play. The ruling BJP-led NDA has joined forces with the primary opposition party TIPRA Motha in Tripura. The other alliance consists of the CPI-M and Congress, known as the I.N.D.I.A bloc.
In the 2019 assembly elections, the BJP secured a majority of votes in both Lok Sabha seats in Tripura.
However, this year, the BJP has substituted Pratima Bhoumik with former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb as their candidate in West Tripura seat. In the East Tripura seat, BJP MP Rebati Tripura has been replaced by Kriti Singh.
On the other hand, the Congress has nominated the party’s state president, Asish Kumar Saha, as its candidate for the West Tripura seat, while the CPI-M has not yet revealed its candidate.
