Agartala, the capital city of Tripura, has been grappling with the issue of water logging for many years. Despite being a relatively small city, Agartala experiences significant challenges during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall often leads to severe flooding. This recurrent problem not only disrupts daily life but also poses long-term risks to the city’s infrastructure and the health of its residents.
Normal life was hit as commuters struggled to travel through knee-deep water as the capital city experienced flood like situation.
Causes of Water Logging in Agartala
Several factors contribute to the persistent water logging in Agartala:
- Inadequate Drainage System: The city’s drainage infrastructure is outdated and insufficient to handle the volume of water that accumulates during heavy rains. Many of the drains are narrow, poorly maintained, and often clogged with debris, reducing their effectiveness in channeling water away from residential and commercial areas.
- Unplanned Urbanization: Rapid urbanization in Agartala has exacerbated the water logging problem. Construction activities, often carried out without proper planning or consideration of the natural water flow, have led to the blocking of natural drainage channels. Additionally, the encroachment of wetlands and low-lying areas, which traditionally acted as natural water sinks, has further reduced the city’s capacity to absorb excess rainwater.
- High Rainfall and Climate Change: Agartala receives heavy rainfall during the monsoon season, and yesterday, the intensity and frequency of the rains have increased, likely due to the effects of climate change. The city’s existing infrastructure is not equipped to handle such extreme weather conditions, leading to frequent flooding.
- Lack of Civic Awareness: Public negligence also plays a role in the water logging issue. Many residents and businesses dispose of waste irresponsibly, which often ends up clogging the drainage systems. This lack of civic responsibility exacerbates the problem, making it difficult for the municipal authorities to keep the drains clean and functional.
Solutions and the Way Forward
Though Agartala Municipal Corporation is working hard to overcome with this situation. And in the recent years Agartala has seen much water logging in the city but the water drained out quickly after railway.
- Upgrading the Drainage System: The most immediate need is to upgrade and expand the city’s drainage system. This involves widening the existing drains, ensuring regular maintenance, and installing new drainage infrastructure where needed. Proper planning and engineering solutions are required to create a drainage system that can cope with the heavy rains that Agartala experiences.
