Tripura opposition leader raises Kokborok subject issue in assembly

On Tuesday, Opposition Leader Animesh Debbarma brought up a crucial matter related to students taking the Kokborok subject in CBSE-affiliated schools in Tripura.

Speaking during the third day of the winter session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Debbarma advocated for students to be given the option to write their answers in either Roman or Bengali script, aligning with the examination practices of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE).

Debbarma raised concerns about the upcoming February examinations, where around 5000 students from various schools are scheduled to take the Kokborok language test.

He stated that students currently face the limitation of writing in Bengali, which may not be convenient for many students.

Debbarma urged Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is also the Education Minister, to address the matter and write a letter to CBSE, requesting that students be given the choice to write in Bengali and Roman script for the Kokborok subject.

In response, Chief Minister Saha informed the Assembly that a three-member committee, led by former MLA Dr Atul Debbarma, has been appointed to address the issue.

The government is awaiting the committee’s report before taking any further action.
Nevertheless, the Opposition Leader countered the Chief Minister’s reply by proposing that, while awaiting the committee’s findings, the Assembly should take the initiative to send a letter to CBSE through the Directorate of Kokborok.

This letter would specifically request the provision of allowing students to choose between writing in Roman and Bengali script for the upcoming examinations, aiming to safeguard 5000 students’ educational future.
