In a notable achievement in countering the insurgency, Tripura Police apprehended two major militants of the proscribed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) Bishwa Mohan (BM) faction on Thursday evening.

The arrested individuals are Sachin Debbarma, a self-proclaimed Army chief of the NLFT BM faction, and Utpal Debbarma, the Secretary General of the Group.

Acting on a tip-off, the police detained the pair in Simna Village, West Tripura District, after their unauthorized entry into India from Bangladesh. Both have been transported to the capital Agartala.

It is reported that the militants have numerous pending cases against them and were previously arrested in Bangladesh, where they had sought refuge and were residing. Due to improved relations between India and Bangladesh, the Bangladeshi police detained them for unlawfully entering Bangladeshi territory.

Their arrest on Thursday suggests they are likely to be presented in court on Friday, where there may be a request or appeal for police custody.

The police commenced their interrogation of the individuals since Thursday night, and extracted significant information that will aid in the continued efforts to counteract the militants.

The ongoing interrogations suggest the possibility of additional arrests in the upcoming days.

Notably, although militancy has not been completely eradicated in Tripura, there have been endeavors by this group to recruit new insurgents. Some recruits were identified, but they later surrendered and reintegrated into normal life.
