The repair work will include fixing gap slabs, checking and greasing the bearings of the nearly 50-year-old bridge to ensure safety and longevity.
Vehicles travelling towards Sribhumi, Hailakandi, and neighbouring states will be diverted via the Kalain-Silchar road.
To protect this alternate route, the movement of loaded vehicles exceeding 40 tons gross laden weight has been banned with immediate effect until further notice.
Whereas, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India under Section 05 of the National Highway Act, 1956 (48 of 1956) has entrusted vide notification number 5.0. 2209(E) dated 3rd July 2020, the stretch from kilometer 173.200 to kilometer 204.000 of Ratacherra to Badarpur Section of National Highway No. 44 (New NH 06) in the State of Assam to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (hereinafter referred to as the “Authority”);
- And Whereas, the Highway Administration for the above said National Highway is satisfied tha: a Major Bridge over Barak River situated at Km. 200.894 (in District: Cachar, Assam) admeasuring 359.80 meters (popularly known as the Gammon Bridge at Badarpurghat) is required to be closed temporarily for all kind of traffic for a period of 60 (Sixty) days for its repair and rehabilitation.
- Now, therefore, in exercise of powers conferred under Section 31 and Section 33 of the Control of National Highways (Land & Traffic) Act, 2002, the Highway Administration hereby orders for temporary closure of Major Bridge (Known as Gammon Bridge) over Barak River situated at Km. 200.894 of NH-44 (New NH-06) in District Cachar, Assam for all type of traffic for a period of 60 (Sixty) days w.e.f. 21 May 2025 up to 20th July, 2025.
