Tripura’s capital Agartala and Davangere city of Karnataka are declared as role models by the Central Government of India for effective drainage systems of these cities, which helped in curbing urban flooding.
After flooding of three major metropolitan cities, namely Bengaluru, Delhi and Gurgaon after heavy rainfall, Centre has pointed out Agartala and Davangere as model cities in terms of flood management.
Both smart cities mapped the existent drainage networks as well as removed illegal encroachments over and around the drainage systems.
Besides, these cities constructed storm water drains to ensure quick extraction of water from water logged areas within a few hours following extreme rainfall.
According to the Economic Times, renovation and redesign of drainage systems have helped these cities to create strong and effective flood management systems.
Although Agartala Smart City was about to be completed before 2018, it remained a dream to the public.
People often tell that no difference or improvements are made in the water extraction and drainage systems, which is wrong.
According to a survey, the duration of the water logged situation has been reduced significantly in 2022 compared to 2018 after installation of multiple advanced flood control pumps and advancement of drainage networks.
Thus, water could be extracted in just a few hours and flood situation could be controlled quickly.
After formation of BJP-IPFT coalition government in 2018, a flood situation occurred in Agartala, when former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb inspected the entire situation from ground level even when water was up to his weist height.
He stood by the affected people and helped them at that time. The majority of beautification and development works including renovation work of the drainage system of Agartala Smart City was done during the tenure of Biplab Deb as CM.
Thus, former CM and current Rajya Sabha MP Biplab Deb has to be mainly praised for the improved drainage system of Agartala for which Agartala and Tripura are getting recognition and appreciation at the national level.
Alongside, Shailesh Kumar Jadhav, Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation has worked relentlessly for mapping the drainage network of 340 km across Agartala and implementation of various flood control measures.
It is to be noted that Agartala did not have a scientific drainage system during the Left government for which the public suffered from water logging problems even after short rainfall.
