AGARTALA — In an effort to curb growing traffic congestion in Agartala, the local traffic police have launched a targeted drive against e-rickshaws operating without valid permits.
On Tuesday, a team led by Traffic Police DSP Pranab Das conducted an enforcement drive in the North Gate area, taking legal action against several illegal e-rickshaw operators.
Key Highlights of the Operation:
- Unregulated Entry: According to DSP Pranab Das, a significant number of electronic autos are illegally entering the core city areas without required permits, severely inflating vehicle density on narrow, busy roads.
- Bypassing Designated Stands: E-rickshaws originating from neighboring areas—such as Mohanpur, Jirania, and Amtali—are reportedly entering the central city without stopping at designated stands, often claiming to carry “reserved” passengers.
- Strict Enforcement Ahead: Authorities confirmed that regular drives will continue to enforce traffic compliance and maintain smooth vehicular movement throughout Agartala.
Exceptions for Essential Needs:
Traffic police clarified that permit-less e-rickshaws will be granted temporary exemption from city restrictions for genuine emergencies, including medical needs, student transportation, and air passenger transfers.
