The BJP has introduced significant changes to its candidate list for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, fielding 19 new faces across the corporation’s 51 wards. Current Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar, however, will not contest the civic polls this time, BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Deb Roy announced.
Explaining the decision, Deb Roy said the BJP was following its national-level policy of keeping elected representatives holding important positions, including MLAs and MPs, out of direct contests for the posts of mayor, chairman and other civic body heads. He clarified that the decision was not a reflection of Majumdar’s performance, praising his work over the past five years and his contribution to the city’s development and public welfare.
Deb Roy added that the party would continue to rely on Majumdar’s leadership and experience during the election campaign while coordinating its organisational strength to secure public support.
According to the BJP state president, the candidate selection process has given importance to representation from different sections of society. Women, young people, lawyers, retired teachers and engineers have been included in the list, with the party aiming to bring diverse professional and social backgrounds into local governance.
Of the 51 AMC seats, candidates have been announced for most constituencies, while the names for six seats are yet to be declared. Deb Roy said the remaining candidates would be finalised on Wednesday. He also stated that three seats would be allotted to the party’s ally, Tipra Motha.
The BJP state president further clarified that no sitting MLA had been given a ticket in the municipalities and nagar panchayats across Tripura in this election.
Expressing confidence in the party’s candidates, Deb Roy said they would work for the welfare of citizens over the next five years. The BJP’s candidate selection and its decision to keep senior elected representatives out of direct civic contests have become key talking points ahead of the upcoming urban local body elections.
