Sabroom, June 17: A political controversy has erupted in Tripura following remarks made by CPIM Politburo member and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury during a public meeting in Sabroom subdivision yesterday.
Chowdhury reportedly made personal attacks against former Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and former Tipra Motha supremo and MDC Pradyot Kishore Debbarman.
In his speech, Chowdhury made an objectionable comment targeting the physical appearance of former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb. He sarcastically remarked that “the taller a person is, the more foolish he becomes,” sparking sharp reactions from the ruling BJP.
Reacting strongly to this, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath condemned Chowdhury’s statement at a press conference held today. Nath questioned whether, by this logic, several communist leaders in India and abroad, taller than MP Biplab Kumar Deb, should also be considered unintelligent. He said, “By making such a statement, Jitendra Chowdhury has insulted tall individuals worldwide, including former Tripura Chief Minister and CPM leader Manik Sarkar.”
Nath further demanded an immediate public apology from Chowdhury to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Tipra Motha. “If he is a sensible person, he should apologize without delay. And if he is suffering from mental instability, he should seek medical treatment,” Nath added.
The remark has sparked widespread criticism in political circles, with leaders from various parties condemning the personal nature of the attack.
