Agartala, June 18:
In yet another political defection, the National Congress party has made inroads into the ruling BJP’s base in Sonamura. On Tuesday, a total of 17 voters from three families of the Boxnagar Assembly Constituency formally left the BJP and joined the Congress.
The defection took place at the Sonamura District Congress office, where District Congress President Deepak Chakraborty welcomed the new members by handing over the party flag. The families of Tony Mag, Kobir Hossain, and Faruk Hossain were among those who severed ties with the BJP to align themselves with the Congress.
Apart from District Congress President Deepak Chakraborty, the event was also attended by Congress District General Secretary Habil Mia and Congress Minority Cell Chairman Rulamin. Party leaders claimed that growing discontent with the ruling BJP’s local leadership and governance prompted the defection.
Congress leaders expressed hope that this development would strengthen their organizational base in the Boxnagar Assembly area ahead of future electoral battles.
