Churachandpur, July 1: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Monday, killing four people, including a 60-year-old woman. The incident occurred around 2 pm near Mongjang village, police confirmed.
According to information received, the victims were travelling in a car when they were ambushed and shot at point-blank range. Over 12 empty cartridges were recovered from the scene. However, the identities of those killed have not been confirmed yet.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Officials from the Churachandpur district headquarters stated that an investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, state officials recently claimed a significant decline in violence across Manipur, citing a sharp drop in civilian casualties and a noticeable rise in drug seizures since President’s Rule was imposed in February. Sunday’s official report had highlighted this relative improvement in law and order though incidents like Monday’s ambush remain a cause for concern.
