Kolkata Erupts in Protest Over Rape of Law Student

Kolkata, June 29, 2025: The streets of Kolkata witnessed a wave of protests on Sunday as people from all walks of life came together to condemn the gang rape of a law college student in the city. The alleged incident, which took place on June 25 at South Calcutta Law College, has sparked fresh outrage, reviving the collective trauma of a similar incident last year.

Protests began outside the college campus and the Kasba Police Station, where the FIR had been registered. By evening, the anger and solidarity had spread to multiple parts of the city — including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Hazra — with citizens raising slogans demanding justice and swift action.

Among those who joined the demonstrations were members of ‘Abhaya Mancha’, a citizens’ collective formed after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024. Students, activists, working professionals, and elderly residents marched shoulder to shoulder, carrying placards and candles, their message clear: Kolkata will not stay silent.

Meanwhile, officials confirmed that the medico-legal examination of the survivor has been completed, and her statement was recorded under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The Kolkata Police, intensifying its probe, has expanded the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to nine officers.
