Agartala, July 8: Ten central trade unions have called for a nationwide general strike tomorrow to press for 17 demands, including the repeal of the four new labour rules, reinstatement of the old pension scheme, and withdrawal of the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill.
In Tripura, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chowdhury has extended support to the strike and urged people to make it a success. Chowdhury said the strike is necessary to protect the rights of workers, employees, and common citizens against policies that threaten their livelihood and welfare.
The trade unions claim the new labor rules dilute workers’ rights and benefits, while the proposed changes in the electricity sector would lead to privatization and increased burden on consumers.
The strike is expected to affect normal life in various parts of the country, including banking, transport, and government services.
