Tipra Motha Party Supporter Dies During Clash At Counting Centre

A supporter of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) died on Monday after sustaining critical injuries during a clash outside a vote-counting centre in Tripura’s Khowai district. The incident triggered a series of political tensions across the state, later escalating into an attack on a senior police officer’s vehicle in Sepahijala district.

The deceased has been identified as Motilal Karmakar. According to official reports, security personnel resorted to a lathi-charge outside the Khowai counting centre after a crowd gathered and attempted to breach surrounding barricades.

During the dispersal, Karmakar reportedly fell and suffered severe injuries while attempting to escape the baton charge. He was initially rushed to Khowai District Hospital before being transferred to the Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries en route. A security personnel member was also injured during the confrontation.

While TMP leaders alleged that Karmakar died due to injuries inflicted by security forces during the baton charge, police officials stated he sustained fatal injuries from a fall while fleeing the scene.

Following the incident in Khowai, political tensions spread to Thalibari under the Jatrapur police station in Sepahijala district. Opposition parties, along with members of the ruling BJP, gathered to protest after alleging that their authorized counting agents were barred from entering the counting venue.

As Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Manchak Ippar was departing the location, his vehicle was targeted by a mob. The vehicle’s windshield was damaged in the attack, though the senior officer escaped unharmed.

Authorities have deployed additional security forces to maintain law and order across the affected districts.
