Tripura Newborn ‘Sold’ To Childless Couple Rescued

Agartala,: In a heartbreaking incident driven by poverty, a one-day-old newborn baby girl was allegedly sold by her parents in Tripura. The incident took place in Katachhara village under the Simna Vidhan Sabha constituency.

According to reports, Lakshmi Rani Sarkar, the wife of Prosenjit Das, gave birth to her fourth child at the Katlamara Primary Health Center on April 30. Allegedly Struggling with dire financial conditions and already having three children to support, the couple allegedly sold their newborn daughter to a family in Khowai.

When questioned, Prosenjit Das and his wife admitted they had handed over the child but claimed they did not have the name or address of the family to whom the baby was given. While the couple initially tried to keep the matter under wraps, Prosenjit’s mother, Basana Das, confirmed that her son and daughter-in-law sold the child in exchange for money.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern across the state. Tripura has witnessed several similar cases of child selling in recent years, though authorities had previously intervened and managed to rescue and reunite those children with their families.

The baby girl is currently safe in a govt children’s home.
