Tripura: Rs 77 lakh in cash seized from train, three held

Cash amounting to Rs 77 lakh was seized from the West Bengal-bound Kanchanjunga Express in two separate incidents near Agartala.

According to the Government Railway Police, during a search at Agartala Railway Station, a total of Rs 9 lakh 56 thousand in cash was found from three individuals, who failed to provide a valid source for the money.

The individuals, identified as Sudhir Wangmo, Krishna Wangmo, and Seema Shinde from Maharashtra, were detained during a joint operation by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) at Agartala railway station.

The individuals detained disclosed that they had arrived in Tripura three days earlier and were traveling to Maharashtra via West Bengal. The case is expected to be transferred to the Income Tax department.

Earlier, on February 14, Government Railway Police officials found unclaimed cash totaling Rs 66.57 lakh on the same express train.

The cash, consisting of Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes, was discovered wrapped in paper on the train’s surface near the lavatory of the B1 compartment.

Even after conversing with passengers, authorities were unable to ascertain the origin of the money. GRP officer Dhananjay Barman mentioned that the investigation into the unclaimed cash case is ongoing.
