Abandoned water bodies will be identified and made suitable for fish farming: Sudhangshu Das

In order to meet the demand for fish in the state, emphasis has been placed on increasing fish production under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana through use of modern technology and infrastructural development.

In order to increase the production of fish, this scheme has also taken initiative to create 100 hectares of new water bodies in the financial year 2023-24 Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das informed this in a press conference organized at the Secretariat’s press conference hall yesterday.

In the press conference, the Fisheries Minister also informed that all abandoned water bodies in the state will be identified and made suitable for fish farming. The department has already started the work of demarcation of abandoned water bodies.

The Fisheries Minister said that for the development of the fisheries sector in the state, the central government has sanctioned 24 crore 11 lakh 87 thousand rupees as central assistance in the financial year 2022-23 under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. So far 5 crore 77 lakh 49 thousand rupees have been given to the state government.

The Fisheries Minister said that under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, 13 new IMC hatcheries will be set up in the financial year 2023-24, 10 coloured fish rearing centres will he set up, 55 bicycles with heat-insulating boxes, 100 motorcycles and 50 three-wheelers will he provided for selling fish, I Fish Value Added Unit will be set up at Champahour in Khowai district at a cost of Rs.50 lakh and 4246 fishermen will get financial assistance for their livelihood

At the press conference, the Fisheries Minister informed that 55 40 lakh fish fingerlings have been released in Dumboor reservoir to increase fish production, 5 hatcheries have been constructed through National Fisheries Development Board under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and 5 more are in progress and under National Fisheries Development Board 36,60 lakh fish fingerlings were released in 11 major rivers of Tripura to increase fish production Secretary BS Mishra and Director Mohammad Muslimuddin Ahmed were present at the press conference.
