Bangladesh: Yunus Government Withdraws  ‘New Bangladesh Day’ Following Political Objections

Dhaka, June 30, 2025: The Bangladesh interim government, led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has officially withdrawn its decision to observe August 8 as New Bangladesh Day, following widespread political objections and public controversy.

The interim administration, which assumed office on August 8 last year, had initially declared the date as New Bangladesh Day to mark the beginning of what it called a new chapter in the country’s political and administrative history. However, since the announcement, various political parties and civil society groups strongly objected to the decision, calling it undemocratic and politically motivated.

Amid mounting criticism and growing pressure from opposition parties, the Yunus government has decided to reverse the move. An official notification confirming the withdrawal was issued on Monday.

Political analysts say the decision reflects the government’s attempt to ease tensions ahead of the upcoming national elections, amid calls for a fully representative electoral process.
