Dibrugarh (Assam), June 30, 2025: In a strategic move to strengthen national security infrastructure, a section of National Highway 1 in Assam’s Dibrugarh district is being developed to function as an emergency airstrip for military aircraft.
According to official sources, a 5-kilometer stretch of the highway is being specially constructed to allow fighter jets such as Sukhoi and Rafale to land and take off during emergencies.
Senior officials from the District Administration, Indian Air Force, and Central Road Transport Department recently inspected the site. Following the visit, they held a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to review the progress and discuss operational protocols for the project.
This initiative is part of a broader national plan to develop road-runway infrastructure in key strategic locations across the country for enhanced defense preparedness.
