Although Agartala was inundated with extra rains, the water is no longer stagnant. The water is drained out with very fast pumps.
There is no flaw in the government’s efforts. The work of the drainage system of the city is being done at a fast pace.
Chief Minister Prof Manik Saha said this at a meeting of the Agartala Flood Management Committee held at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said that the implementation of long-term action plans for flood management in Agartala would be possible only if the experience of the local people could be utilized to implement the long-term plans properly.
Moreover, the citizens of Agartala should also follow the rules for proper use of drains and disposal of waste.
Authorities should ensure that the drains are not blocked.
CM directed the concerned officers to expedite the work of preparation of DPR of the undertakings.
At the beginning of the meeting, Kiran Gito, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, outlined the program of prevention of rainwater logging and drainage management in Agartala through an illustrated presentation.
He discussed in detail about Agartala and the city’s rainfall statistics, drainage information, drain cleaning system, current condition of city pumps and drainage system.
He said currently there are 16 pumping stations in Agartala for drainage.
He said plans have been taken to launch two more pump stations in the city by November this year.
He also discussed the improvement of the drain from Ganraj Chaumuhani to Katakhal.
Secretary Mr Gito also discussed in detail about the maintenance of Howrah river, Katakhal and prevention of dam erosion.
