Dharmanagar, July 15: Fresh concerns have emerged over the security infrastructure in Dharmanagar, with allegations that nearly all 94 CCTV cameras installed at key locations across the city have remained non-functional for the past one to two months.

The alleged failure of the surveillance network has raised serious questions about public safety, especially amid reports of a rise in thefts and other criminal incidents. The CCTV cameras were installed at important intersections, markets, the district hospital, government offices and other sensitive locations to strengthen security and assist law enforcement.

However, with the cameras reportedly out of service, police are said to be facing difficulties in investigating crimes due to the absence of video footage.

Local residents alleged that the issue has been brought to the attention of the municipal authorities on several occasions, but no effective steps have been taken to restore the surveillance system. They further claimed that instead of resolving the problem, attempts are being made to shift the blame onto an employee responsible for monitoring the system.

According to locals, thefts have recently been reported from government offices, hospitals, business establishments and jewellery shops, adding to concerns over law and order.

With a CCTV surveillance project reportedly worth crores of rupees remaining inactive for an extended period, residents have questioned the effectiveness of the city’s security arrangements.

They have urged the administration to immediately repair and restore the CCTV network to strengthen surveillance and help curb criminal activities.
