Following an unusually dry July in Northeast India so far, the region is about to experience intense monsoon rains over the upcoming weekend, which are expected to make up for the rainfall deficit this month.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area over south north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and the adjoining northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal will bring moistsoutherly-southeasterly winds to the Northeastern region, which would cause the anticipated precipitation.
Thus, a considerable area in Northeast India will witness widespread rain of varying intensity, ranging from light to moderate, over the next four days, spanning from Saturday to Tuesday, July 22-25.
The Northeastern states of India, including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will have heavy showers (64.5 mm-115.5 mm) on Saturday and Sunday, while Assam and Meghalaya will experience heavy rainfall from Saturday to Tuesday.
Arunachal Pradesh will experience showers from Sunday to Tuesday. Based on these predictions, all these states have been placed on a yellow watch for their respective heavy rainfall days.
It will be intriguing to observe the impact of this current rain spell on bringing July’s rainfall back to normal in Northeast India.
So far, during this month, Arunachal has experienced a 12% shortfall with 332 mm of rainfall, Assam-Meghalaya has faced a 30% deficit with 273.9 mm of rainfall, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura has suffered a 37% deficiency with 150.8 mm of rainfall, all compared to their usual levels for this period.
