Illegal infiltration through Tripura border raises fresh security concerns

Agartala, Jan 9: Illegal Bangladeshi immigrants are reportedly using Tripura as a transit corridor to reach safe in West Bengal, taking advantage of vulnerabilities along the international border.

Sources indicate that this has become a regular phenomenon, with hundreds of infiltrators entering Tripura, West Bengal and other parts of the country through this route.

In a recent incident, within the last 12 hours, two Bangladeshi nationals illegally crossed the barbed-wire fence at the Sonamura border and entered Tripura. One of them has been identified as Amir Hossain, a resident of Ramnagar under Kaliganj police station in Bangladesh’s Satkhira district. During interrogation, Hossain admitted that he paid 4,000 Bangladeshi taka to border brokers to facilitate his entry into Tripura.

The incident once again highlights the fragile and vulnerable condition of Tripura’s international border security system, raising serious concerns over repeated illegal infiltration through the northeastern corridor.
