Security has been tightened along the sensitive Tripura-Mizoram border following a low-intensity explosion at an under-construction tourist facility in North Tripura district, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Wednesday at Betlingchhip, the highest peak in Tripura, where the state government has been developing an eco-park with additional amenities such as a cafeteria. Betlingchhip, located near Phuldungsei village in Mizoram’s Mamit district, is a disputed area claimed by both states.

Tensions in the region have been simmering after Mizoram recently objected to the construction of the facility. In response to the opposition, the Tripura government had temporarily halted the project.
