Tensions Flare Between Journalists and Tipra Motha Supporters in Udaipur

Udaipur, Tripura | May 27, 2024 — A tense situation unfolded in Udaipur on Monday following a confrontation between journalists and supporters of Tipra Motha’s youth wing, the YTF. The incident has sparked concerns over journalist safety in the state.

The controversy began around 7 PM on Sunday when Tipra Motha chief, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, popularly known as ‘Maharaj’ among his followers, sought an urgent meeting with Gomati District Magistrate, Tarit Kanti Chakma. However, the district magistrate reportedly declined to give him time for the meeting.

In response, the YTF organised a press conference on Monday in Udaipur to address the issue. Tensions escalated during the event when a journalist referred to Pradyot Kishore Debbarma by name, without using the customary titles of “Raja” or “Maharaj”. This remark provoked anger among several YTF supporters, who allegedly attempted to snatch the journalist’s mobile phone.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, several journalists faced verbal abuse and were even accused of being “Bangladeshi”. Insulting remarks and threats were reportedly made, further aggravating the situation.

The incident drew sharp reactions from the local press fraternity. Journalists working in Udaipur convened and met with Additional Superintendent of Police (on deputation), Sauvik De, demanding a fair and transparent investigation into the matter. They also called for strict action against those involved in intimidating media personnel.
