In a troubling display of street politics, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) — the youth wing of the Tipra Motha party — has issued an ultimatum to the Tripura government, threatening to impose a self-declared “Covid-like lockdown” across the state if their demands are not met within seven days.
The group, claiming offense over an alleged slight against party chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma by Gomati District Magistrate Tariat Kanti Chakma, staged an aggressive protest on Monday. YTF activists unlawfully locked the main entrance of the district magistrate’s office in Udaipur, disrupting official work and public services.
Despite no official confirmation of the alleged disrespect incident, YTF leaders took to the streets and extended their protests to sub-divisional offices in Amarpur and Korbook. Speaking to reporters, YTF president Suraj Debbarma warned of escalating actions, directly threatening public order and daily life in the region.
Many observers have criticized the YTF’s tactics as undemocratic and harmful to the common people of Tripura. Political analysts have raised concerns over a political outfit taking the law into its own hands.
