The 13th Tripura Assembly’s first budget session’s initial day began on Friday amidst a significant commotion, as members of the Opposition expressed their dissatisfaction with the lack of action taken against BJP MLA Jadav Lal Nath.
It was alleged that Nath had been observed watching explicit content on his mobile phone during the previous session of the Assembly.
The protest commenced when Sudip Roy Barman, an MLA from the Congress party, entered the House carrying a bottle of ‘Gangajal’ and sprinkled it symbolically to cleanse the Assembly of the stain caused by the pornography incident.
Following that, the Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma, the leader of the TIPRA Motha party stood up to inquire if Speaker Biswabandhu Sen would permit him to present an adjournment motion against MLA Nath in the Assembly.
However, Sen urged the Opposition legislators to return to their seats and allow the budget presentation to proceed.
Despite the ongoing protests by the Opposition members, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy proceeded to deliver his budget speech for the ‘tax-free, deficit budget’ amounting to Rs 27,654.45 crore.
Nevertheless, the Opposition members congregated in the Assembly’s central area and demanded the speaker take action against the BJP MLA. A few agitated members even climbed onto the table where the Assembly record writers were seated, near the secretary’s chair.
However, the watch-and-ward staff prevented a couple of them from approaching the speaker any further.
Tripura assembly today witnessed uproarious scenes as the MLAs jumped into the well and some even walked on the tables.
The members of Tripura Legislative Assembly started raising slogans while state Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy had just started presenting the annual budget for 2023-24.
Five MLAs of the opposition parties in Tripura were suspended for the day by the assembly speaker amid an uproar. Their suspension was, however, revoked later in the day.
